Pet-friendly Wolfenstein tribute Darkenstein 3D releases next month and it’s free

Waiting for MachineGames to deliver another entry in the Wolfenstein series? You might be waiting a while, but one developer has stepped up to fill that gap with Darkenstein 3D, a tribute to the series ’90s-era entries. It’s releasing next month and, even better, it’s free.
Darkenstein 3D is the work of developer Rowye and has found a publisher in MicroProse Software. Unlike id Software’s Wolfenstein, which had you shooting Nazi-trained dogs, it promises to be more pet friendly. In fact, your whole reason for going up against the Axis is to rescue your canine pal.
But while Rowye describes it as “Inspired by the brutal pace of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the glory days of late 90s shooters,” it’s not a one-joke parody. Instead, it’s “..tough, fast, and demands skill, just the way those old-school shooters did.”
The premise is that you play as an American drifter who has drifted all the way to Nazi Germany. Your dog, Gunther, has been abducted and you’ve got to kick bottom to get him back. Aside from the usual Axis trappings, you’ll also encounter alien technology and other oddities.
There’s certainly some not-of-this-Earth weaponry on display in the above trailer and the demo, which you can play now, is suitably silly. You encounter a dying American soldier and, aside from the whereabouts of your dog, your other concern is whether you can take his boots.
Darkenstein 3D releases this October 21st. In the meantime, you can wishlist it and play the demo on Steam.
